The Problem:

I recently bought an HP all-in-one computer from Costco and ran into WiFi problems right out of the box. WiFi issues on these computers are apparently pretty common, as there are countless online discussions on the topic, none of which include a viable fix. This being the case, I wrote this step-by-step guide on how to sort out the issue.

The Backstory

When I turned the HP all-in-one computer on for the first time, it prompted me to plug in an ethernet cable to connect to the internet and proceed - “Connect to a WiFi network” wasn’t an option. Though it seemed unusual, I proceeded with the ethernet connection to update the machine, thinking this would fix the problem and add an option for WiFi connectivity. Despite several attempts to update device drivers and ensure Windows was up-to-date, the issue persisted. After investing a lot of time researching and trying various solutions without success, I spent an evening with HP Support. Here’s how they fixed it:

Precautions

Before starting, make sure you save all your work, as you will be required to restart your computer. You’ll want to keep this guide open on another device for easy reference.

Step 1: Shut Down Your Computer

First, turn off your HP all-in-one computer and wait for at least five seconds. This helps clear any temporary configurations that might be causing the issue.

Step 2: Enter BIOS Setup

Press the power button to start your computer. As soon as the computer begins to power up, repeatedly press the F10 key. This will take you to the BIOS setup menu.

Step 3: Load Default Settings

In the BIOS setup menu, press the F9 key. This action will select and load the default settings for the BIOS.

Step 4: Save and Exit

Press the F10 key to save these settings and exit the BIOS setup menu.

Step 5: Confirm Changes

You’ll see a prompt asking, “Exit Saving Changes?” Use the arrow keys to highlight “Yes,” and then press Enter.

Step 6: Restart

Follow additional prompts to restart. After restarting, your computer should now have WiFi as an option in the bottom right near the time and date. Bluetooth will also now be an available option.

These steps should assist you in fixing WiFi and Bluetooth connection issues on your HP all-in-one computer. If the problem continues, contacting HP customer support might be a good idea. I had a positive experience with the HP rep who helped me. I wasn’t expecting such a thorough experience. Nice work, HP!
